Forstner bits drill a flat-bottomed hole, making them a necessary tool for many hardware installations where a precise depth of mortise is required. Forstner bits are guided by the wide outside rim of the bit, unlike most drill bits, which are guided by the tip. The differences between forstner bit and twist drill bits are optimized for woodworking applications and cut exceptionally precise, clean edged holes in wood. |

Sizes 1/4" to 7/8" bits are supplied with solid rims. The saw teeth design for larger diameter bits (1" and larger) stop burning and cut faster without losing the advantages of Forstner bit action. Shank size is 3/8" and overall length is 3-1/2" for sizes 1/4" through 2-1/8", excluding metric sizes.
Cutting precise, large-diameter holes with a portable power drill or drill press can be done with a variety of drill bit attachments, including a hole saw, spade bit, or Forstner bit. While each one has its advantages, the Forstner typically drills the cleanest holes.
