The blood bag is moved during collection for a few reasons:
1. Mixing: Moving the blood bag helps to mix the anticoagulant, which is added to prevent the blood from clotting. By gently rocking or rotating the bag, the anticoagulant gets evenly distributed throughout the collected blood, ensuring that it remains in a liquid state.
2. Preventing clotting: Blood has a natural tendency to clot when it is exposed to air or when it is not in constant motion. Moving the blood bag helps to prevent clot formation by keeping the blood in motion and ensuring that it remains well-mixed with the anticoagulant.
3. Facilitating collection: During blood collection, the phlebotomist or technician needs to keep the needle in the vein while the blood is being collected. Moving the blood bag helps to maintain a continuous flow of blood into the bag, making it easier for the technician to collect the required volume of blood without needing to reposition the needle.
