The process of ionization is responsible for the existence of plasma. Ionization is the change in the charge of an atom and occurs when the atom loses or gains electrons. However, plasma does not require 100% ionization of atoms to occur. If even 1% of the atoms are ionized a plasma can exist. The level of ionization is what defines how hot the plasma will be. Lower levels are referred to as [cold plasmas" and vice-versa with high levels. Don`t get the wrong idea though, plasma is never actually cold. The [cold plasmas" are still thousands of degrees Celsius.
